TO CREATE YOUR OWN WEDDING MAGIC LET YOUR WEDDING MATCH YOUR STYLE. Tonya and Scott blended their families at a cabin in the woods amidst autumn’s splendor. (photo by Maya Ana Photography)

Welcome! This site is a tribute to my many wedding couples who have created unique and beautiful surroundings for their weddings. Their creativity and ingenuity reflected their personalities and together we have often created new ways to modernize old traditions.

Lauren and Evan - A Winter Wedding at the Haw River Ballroom - Love, Laughter and Unique DIY Touches

I so love this picture of Lauren and Evan. It captures the special spark they share. Each has such a great sense of humor and they sprinkle it liberally throughout their lives. You can tell they have a lot of fun together and so does everyone around them. It came as no surprise, therefore, that their humor would show itself in their wedding planning, their vows and in all their unique wedding decorations.

Taking place in December, but not wanting to use a holiday wedding theme, they chose instead to go with a classic winter white, cranberry red and grey color scheme. And, my goodness, didn’t it look stunning!

Their dog was the Ring Bearer

Bridesmaids carried muffs rather than bouquets - perfect for a winter wedding!

They chose the Haw River Ballroom as their wedding location. Tucked back along the Haw river in Saxapahaw, NC, this unique building is a concert and event venue space and perfect for those who are looking for something different. That made it absolutely perfect for Lauren and Evan.

Love how this building glows at night.

The inside, set up for the wedding.

They decided to have the wedding on the stage with the red curtain. Evan’s dad built the incredible wooden wall that became the backdrop for the ceremony and it was really beautiful.

As you can see, their florist, Wylde Flowers, decorated the wall in style. They also made a beautiful bouquet for Lauren and exquisite boutonnieres for Evan and his Groomsmen.

During the ceremony, Evan and his Best Man waited on the ground level for the rings to arrive. Once the Best Man had taken the rings from the Ring Dog’s collar, he joined us on the stage.

With this Bride and Groom being Lauren and Evan, it was inevitable that they would make each other laugh during their vows. And they did. It was special for all of us.

At the end of the ceremony, the happy family went out the aisle as the trio they are.

Most of the photographs had been taken before the wedding so Lauren and Evan could immediately join the guests upstairs for the cocktail hour.

The cocktail hour was happening on the upper level.

As the room was being readied for the reception, the band, Peter Lamb and the Wolves started playing. Nice.

Set up for the reception with the band on the stage in the background.

I can honestly say I have never seen the Haw River Ballroom looking as beautiful and sparkly as it did that night, thanks in no small part to Lauren and Evan’s design vision. Take a peek at all their special touches...

They even had the non-dancers covered.

The gold accents on the tables caught the light beautifully.

After dinner, the dancing and partying began in earnest and it is obvious that a great time was had by all.

It was such a special evening and as they left as husband wife, the happy couple - along with the Ring Dog - made their final exit through a hail of dry snowflakes tossed by their guests.

Lauren and Evan, a toast to you. It was a joy to be part of your fun and stylish wedding that was such a perfect reflection of who you are, and who you are together.

May all the roads you travel bring you joy and laughter and many fun memories to savor all your lives.

A special thanks goes to Lauren and Evan’s photographers, Carolyn and Geoff, who have allowed the use of their wonderful photos here. They are the dynamic husband and wife team of Carolyn Scott Photography and they, too, have a fun sense of humor. It is easy to understand why Lauren and Evan chose to work with them. Carolyn and Geoff have written a great blog post about this wedding, with many more photos of the event than I have shown here. I do highly recommend you take the time to read their post and check out all the photos.

I have worked with Carolyn and Geoff many times at weddings and love their traditional-but-with-a-unique-twist approach. I was honored they chose me as their minister for their own fun, Zombie Jamboree wedding. If you would like to read about it, here is the blog post I wrote.

Now That You Are Engaged... A Wedding Planning Timeline

This fun graphic, courtesy of Silvia Zvekan of Bwedding Invitations, lays out a very practical timeline of 43(!) steps to help you with your wedding planning. For those of us in the Triangle and Triad areas of North Carolina, however, I would suggest a few revisions;

1 - Book your photographer, your wedding planner and any special transportation to and from your wedding much earlier than Silvia recommends. These wedding professionals book up very early in our area and it may be the same where you will be marrying, too.

2 - Definitely have your wedding dress ordered by no later than the 6 month mark. The sooner you find the right dress and purchase it the less stress you will be under, especially if your dress will require a fair bit of alterations. It can often take a while for your dress to be available in your size, or to allow for any special ordering involved, so do factor that in when you start dress shopping.

Silvia has written a great blog post elaborating on all 43 steps and I recommend you give her helpful post a read. You will be very glad you did. It always helps to have a plan!
