Welcoming 2014

As every year winds down, it tends to make one pause, reflecting on the year that has passed and the new year that is dawning. Every January begins a fresh new year on which to write your life, your hopes, your achievements and your joys. Every year we endeavor to be better, stronger, kinder, thinner, healthier. Every year always begins with our dreams of things to come.

And so it is with weddings. How happy you must be to be planning your wedding and imagining the life you will be creating with the person you love. May your wedding day and your married life to come bring you the fulfillment of every one of your dreams.
Happy New Year, Bride-to-Be!

Merry Christmas! A Cute Christmas Video From Heart Stone Films

A very Merry Christmas to one and all!
___

A cute little bit of Christmas cheer crossed my desk today and I just had to share it with everyone.

Heart Stone Films, one of our excellent local video companies, is the very talented team of Chris and Toni Wheaton, Lindsey Wachter and Kevin Alexander.

Their Christmas card this year (2013) is a clever little stop-motion short - the story of a penguin searching for just the right gift for his lady love. (Penguins are their company logo.)

So sit back and enjoy this 3 minute treat. You will be very glad you did!

Thanks, Toni, Chris, Lindsey and Kevin. You are such great artists!

Lily and Chris Marry with Love and Creativity at Highgrove Estate in Fuquay-Varina

Lily and Chris met in 2011 - one day after his birthday - when they and a group of their friends went out for a boat ride on Chris’ boat. The two of them have been inseparable ever since and Chris loves to say that Lily was his birthday present that year.

This handsome boat captain has a hidden side. Straying not too far from his love of the water, he collects rubber duckies and they were in evidence all over the place in the decorations, the Bride and Groom table, and someone who obviously knows them very well even put a Bride and Groom pair of ducks on their gift.

note the fun “Mad Libs” card at each place setting for the guests to fill in - great idea

And speaking of the wedding cake, this lovely creation was by Sweet Memories Bakery. It looked too beautiful to eat!

The wedding was held at the very special Highgrove Estate in Fuquay-Varina. Tucked away off the highway and sitting right on Laurel Lake, it is a beautiful oasis of charm. Surrounded by trees that turn bright yellow in the autumn, it is simply stupendous. Highgrove has its own in-house wedding planners and for Lily and Chris, Whitney was on board to make sure everything went along perfectly for them. She was a great, caring professional and I really enjoyed working with her.

and this is the back pergola above the lake, where the wedding took place

Yellow is one of my favorite colors and as you enter the front door you are greeted with a beautiful curving stairway sitting amidst cheery yellow walls awash in sunlight from the big front windows. When I arrived that day, Chris and his groomsmen were on the stairs, being photographed by their photographers, Sweet Life Studios. Comprised of Elizabeth and Frank Myers and Christa Davidson, these excellent photographers were all over the place and I can’t wait to see their photos when they are online!

There were all kinds of other clever elements that were included, like this nice sign by the brick stairs as the guests headed to their seats.

Beautiful flowers were hung from the aisle chairs.

During the ceremony, Lily and Chris planted a “Unity Tree” together.
All those pink blossoms foretell of a beautiful continuation of love unfolding.

There was a very stylish bench that the guests were to sign -
what a GREAT keepsake from their wedding!

Because it was autumn, these simple vine pomanders were hung from the ceiling of the pergola. Looking beyond them to the autumn lake and trees, it was a perfect accompaniment to the glory of Mother Nature.

And what would an autumn wedding be without a s’mores table set up outside?!

The center bowl is the burner for the s’mores.

Love the simple, rustic styling of moss, stones, burlap and succulents on the table.

And check out the white blankets on the left side of the table beside the mossy toadstools.
Those blankets were a very thoughtful addition for the chilly night to come.

Inside the ballroom, this lovely table setting was at the newlyweds’ table.

All the other tables sported a variety of pretty, rustic table centerpieces using lively autumn colors. Note the blue tablecloths with the burlap runners, the wooden table numbers and wooden centerpiece bases.

There was also a sweet tribute to their beloved family members who could not be with them for the wedding.

Through the ceremony and cocktail hour, Brittany Makely and Marissa Farrell, “Sisters on the Harp,”  entertained us with their lovely flute and harp stylings.

Set up on a table so the guests couldn’t miss them when they left, were these little potted succulents of many varieties. With the tree planting they had done during the ceremony and these as guest favors, it speaks perfectly to the kind of life and marriage that Lily and Chris plan to create.

_____________

Lily and Chris, there are millions of people who love rubber duckies so I thought I would pass along this story of a particular giant rubber duck.

artist / designer - Florentijn Hofman
(this photo is real, not photoshopped)

Rubber duckies bring smiles everywhere in the world, as evidenced by the work of Dutch artist, Florentijn Hofman. He builds VERY large rubber duckies that float in natural bodies of water. This particular duck is almost 5 stories tall. Each duck is designed for the specific body of water into which it will be sailed. The duck above is in the Sydney, Australia harbor. The photo below is the same duck as it was entering the harbor and the one further down is the duck hanging out by the harbor walkway.

This rubber duck art has traveled around the world and everywhere it goes, people flock to see it. Here is what the artist says about his amazing work;

“The Rubber Duck knows no frontiers, it doesn’t discriminate people and doesn’t have a political connotation. The friendly, floating Rubber Duck has healing properties: it can relieve [world] tensions as well as define them. The rubber duck is soft, friendly and suitable for all ages!

The work has traversed global waters since 2007 and could be seen in St. Nazaire (FR), Sao Paulo (BR), Auckland (NZ), Hasselt (BE), Osaka and Hiroshima (JP), Sydney (AUS), Nürnberg (DE), Amsterdam (NL), Pittsburgh, PA (USA) and many more places.”

What a treat it must have been for all the people in those towns to have been visited by this cute yellow happiness!

(For more photos and text about this Rubber Ducky art project, check out the blog post by Daniel Dou in his blog, The Endearing Designer, from which this text and photos were taken.)

Strangers Come Together To Help Sharon and John Marry at The Gene Strowd Community Rose Garden in Chapel Hill

Sharon and John met in college in 1981, dated for a time, but their lives took them on separate paths after graduation. Through the years, they kept in touch with each other occasionally and by 2000 they had reunited and planned to marry. Unfortunately, there were a lot of family illnesses on both sides and they felt they had to be there for their families so the wedding was put on hold repeatedly as they prioritized being there for those they loved who needed them so much.

Now fast forward to November 2013, where my daughter, my grandson and I enter their story.

They had planned a business trip to Chapel Hill and decided to marry while here. In their search for information on marriage licenses in NC, my website came up and they sent me an email the day before they were to be in Chapel Hill. But I didn’t see it until the following morning - the day they had hoped to marry! “Could I marry them that afternoon - and could I provide 2 witnesses,” they asked.

I had planned to have lunch with my daughter and her son that day so my daughter volunteered to be one of the witnesses. When I couldn’t find another available person on such short notice, I suggested we ask someone at the Strowd Rose Garden, where we planned to have the ceremony. Sharon told me God had put together this wedding and she knew we would find someone. She was right.

The sun was shining brightly and, despite it having turned cold in the last few days, most of the roses were still blooming. This created a lovely setting for their wedding to finally take place. God had indeed put together this wedding.

The rose garden sits adjacent to a small playground so John went over and asked a young woman with a child and two dogs if she would be their other witness. She readily agreed and now our wedding was ready to begin.

With two witnesses who did not know each other or the Bride and Groom, two children, two dogs, John, Sharon and I - and the occasional passer-by in the garden - we held our very touching ceremony with God’s obvious blessing.

Sharon held a large white, hydrangea blossom as a bouquet and a white prayer book that had been John’s mother’s, which had been given to her by her mother. John’s father had given the book to Sharon before he passed and Sharon got all choked up just telling me the story of the book and showing me the inside note to her from John’s father. John’s parents and grandmother were there with us in Spirit, as was Sharon’s grandmother, whose wedding ring Sharon would be wearing.

After the ceremony it was time for the witnesses to sign the license.

Sharon gave her bouquet to our little guest, who was delighted to receive it, and the two of them bonded immediately.

note Sharon holding the prayer book

I had brought my camera so Sharon and John would have some photos of their wedding day and we all took photos of ourselves, this group of strangers who became friends because God had put us all together for a wedding.

Sharon and John, life is so remarkable. When I awoke yesterday, I had no idea I would meet you and share in such a special time in your lives. It was a treat to hear your story, see your love in action and to be a part of your wedding. I hope your life together will continue to be filled with God’s magic, just like your wedding day.
__________

The young woman with her daughter and dogs turned out to be a dog trainer and I noticed her two dogs were very well behaved. She must be good at what she does and seems to use a gentle hand in the training. If you are in need of a trainer, here is a link to her website;

It turns out her daughter is a budding young actress who is soon to have a role in a feature film! Someday when she is famous, all of us there that day are going to be able to say we knew her when. I hope she never forgets her part in a wedding for strangers and the sweet bond we all shared that day.
___________

UPDATE 7-5-14 - I recently ran into this woman and her daughter again at a summer drama camp presentation in which my granddaughter took part. Our lovely young actress had attended the same camp and was there as part of the performance. I learned there that the movie she would be appearing in is Dumb and Dumber 2. Let’s hope it’s a big success.
