Marta and Jake Exchange Vows and 110 Year Old Coins at Highgrove Estate in Fuquay-Varina

Marta and Jake had married just before the Air Force sent Jake to Korea but they had always wanted to have the big wedding of their dreams, so when Marta contacted me about helping her put all that together, I was so happy to play a part. I was to learn later - after Jake was back in town a week before the wedding (!) - what a great couple they are together. They seem to read each other’s minds, so even though they have been separated for so long, they were still able to work long-distance to put this beautiful wedding together. Sadly, they will still have a few months of separation after the wedding before Jake can retire from the military, but they are sure to weather the last few months with ease, knowing a new direction will soon begin with both of them in the same time zone.

It always shows when a couple put their hearts into their wedding and for Marta and Jake this was especially so. Starting with their choice of venue, Highgrove Estate - which was helmed that day by Ann Eberle, one of the excellent Wedding Directors there - things could not have been more perfect. Even the bright, sunny day with a slight breeze was perfect as we stood out under the pergola for the ceremony.

Their photographer for the day was Julie Livingston Photography and she has graciously offered the use of her photos for this blog post. (Thanks Julie!) Most of the photos here are by Julie and she is quite a talent. Here is a link to her sweet blog post about Marta and Jake’s wedding.

The wedding decoration style was simple and elegant, with the wedding colors being shades of purple and light blue. I love the softly-colored bouquets and the single hanging flowers under the pergola. All the florals were provided by Daniel’s Florist in Raleigh.

Marta is Spanish and wanted to incorporate her heritage into the ceremony by speaking her vows in English and Spanish (her parents do not speak English) and by incorporating the Ceremony of the 13 Coins, which is a time-honored part of a Spanish wedding ceremony. Marta’s parents brought the family heirloom coins with them from Spain. The coins have been used in all their family’s weddings for the last 110 years and even with the language barrier, I could tell it meant so much to them to be able to continue this tradition here in North Carolina. Marta’s father proudly told me - as best he could get through to me because I do not speak Spanish - that the coins were from the era of the Grandfather of King Carlos I of Spain. (Luckily there was a man standing nearby who could interpret what Mr. Bujedo was saying.)

Here are Marta’s parents holding the coins and Mrs. Bujedo pouring them into her husband’s hands. Because the coins signify the trust the husband and wife put into each other for the betterment of their marriage, it really touched me that they were willing to share with me so much about their treasured coins.

Here are two photos Julie took after the wedding, showing a close-up of the coins and Marta holding them. One day they will be used at the weddings of Marta and Jake’s children.

The ballroom of Highgrove Estate was ablaze with the light of the sunny day, showing off the purples and blues on the tables and the pretty cake with the fun topper, created by Cinda’s Creative Cakes.

The sun parlor of the house was set up for the guests to leave their cards and write their best wishes to the happy couple, which I noticed everyone did. And the personal touches about themselves were very sweet, too.

At the end of the night, Marta and Jake left the fun reception with the sounds of happy music ringing in their ears and the laughter of all their guests holding up a sparkler arch. What a fun exit that must have been! (Their DJ was Garrett of Lenny Fritts Touch of Class DJs.)

Marta and Jake, it was a special treat to get to know you and to help you create such a heart-felt, happy wedding. I know you are going to have a wonderful, happy life together - once you get to live in the same town.
